Supporting Climate Action in the Language Industry
There's no getting around it: while globalization has a multitude of benefits, it has also been a driver of climate change. Increased emissions related to international trade and transportation, the exploitation of natural resources, unchecked emissions in developing countries with permissive environmental regulations, over-consumption, and long supply chains all contribute to environmental degradation.
And let's not overlook the increasing use of AI-driven technologies, widely used in the language industry, which require significant computational power and lead to higher energy consumption. Data centers also produce substantial greenhouse gases, further exacerbating climate change.
Promoting Sustainability and Green Initiatives in the Language Industry
Organizations and professionals in the global language industry are aware of their environmental impact and many are committed to promoting sustainability.
Together with a group of other concerned industry organizations, including CSA Research, the Association of Language Companies (ALC), the Association of Translation Companies (ATC), Anzu Global, and Multilingual Magazine, GALA is dedicated to driving green initiatives and inspiring our colleagues to do more to combat climate change.
Individually and collectively, we'll be producing content on sustainability and sharing action-oriented information specifically tailored for our audiences in the global language industry.
