Winners will receive a scholarship to attend GALA 2025 Montreal

Students from around the world are invited to apply for GALA's Rising Star Scholarship. Two winners will receive a full registration plus travel to attend GALA 2025 in beautiful Montreal, Canada.

How to Apply

Create an original essay and video responding to the prompt below. The scholarship is open to students currently enrolled or that graduated in 2024 from translation, localization, interpreting, or related programs* at the university level.

Prompt

The translation and localization industry is undergoing significant changes due to the rapid advancement of AI and the lasting impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. AI has revolutionized workflows, enhancing speed and efficiency, while the pandemic accelerated remote collaboration and shifted client expectations. As a result, adaptability and resilience have become essential for professionals to thrive.

How are you, as a future translation and localization professional, preparing to adapt to these significant changes in the industry? Share examples from your experiences that showcase your skills and strategies for thriving in this evolving landscape.

Application Materials

To apply for the scholarship, you will need:

  • A GALA user account with your school email address; you do not need to be a GALA member to apply.**
  • Essay answering the prompt
    • 400-750 words excluding the reference section (comply with minimum and maximum word counts)
    • Reference section and citations (hyperlinks where possible) to your sources.
    • Written in English 
    • Do not use identifying information
  • Video
    • 1-2 minutes (comply with minimum and maximum time)
    • Must add to and not repeat the essay text
    • Text and any voice over in English
    • Normal speech speed
    • Do not use identifying information
  • A CV
  • Proof of current enrollment or graduation in 2024. The following are accepted: an unofficial transcript, a signed note from university staff on official letterhead, or a picture of your diploma/certificate.

Guidelines:

  • Do not use identifying information in the essay or video (name, image of yourself, university, country, employers); the scholarship committee reviews the submissions anonymously. 
  • Do not use AI to create your text. AI created pictures are allowed. Any AI tools must be disclosed on the application form.
  • Not following the application guidelines and requirements (anonymity, minimums, maximums, etc.) may result in an automatic disqualification.

The Scholarship Package

Each winner will receive a prize package to attend GALA's annual conference in Montreal, Canada. The scholarship includes:

  • Full conference registration, including the GALA dinner
  • Three nights for one individual at the conference hotel (13-16 April 2025)
  • Reimbursement of travel/lodging expenses to attend the conference. Travel/lodging expenses are limited to travel costs from winner’s home city to the conference city, travel between airport and hotel
  • Winning entry published on GALA's platform

Winners are expected to travel economy class, and airfare shall not be booked without prior approval. Any additional expenses will be the winner’s responsibility. Appropriate documentation must be provided prior to receiving reimbursement. No cash equivalent will be provided.  

Eligibility

The scholarship contest is open to students currently enrolled in or that graduated in 2024 from translation, localization, interpreting, or industry-related programs at the university level. Entrants will need to provide proof of current enrollment or program completion. (Examples: unofficial transcript, signed note from university staff on official letterhead, picture of your diploma/certificate.) You do not have to be a GALA member to apply. 

Limit one entry per person; duplicate entries will not be considered. Team submission will not be considered. Former winners are not eligible to participate in the contest again.

All eligible submissions are reviewed by a GALA staff member and the Rising Star Scholarship Committee. GALA reserves the right to reject any submission for any reason at its sole discretion. 

Contest Rules

One submission per person. Team submissions will not be considered. Content must be original.

Entries will be reviewed by the Rising Star Scholarship Committee, who will select two winners based on the thesis, originality, and strength of argument. Entries are not judged based on English language skills. The committee reviews anonymized submissions.

Winners will be notified in December or January. Winners must confirm via email that they accept within one week of being notified. If you are unable to attend the conference or we do not receive your confirmation, a new winner will be selected.

By entering the contest, you certify that the content you are submitting has no conflicting claims of copyright and that nothing related to your entry violates or infringes upon another person’s copyright.

By entering the contest, you agree that GALA may use your content in publications, promotional materials, presentations, and websites.

About the Rising Star Scholarship

GALA's Rising Star Scholarship awards two individuals with registration and travel costs to attend GALA's annual Language of Business Conference and publishes the winning entries. The scholarship is open to students and faculty in translation, localization, interpreting, and related programs (such as computational linguistics, international business, and more). The scholarship is overseen by GALA's membership manager and the Rising Star Scholarship Committee, comprised of volunteer industry stakeholders. The committee develops the theme for the annual application and reviews the submissions anonymously to select the winners. The scholarship is sponsored by member organizations.
