MA in Conference interpreting and Translation
The Joint Postgraduate Studies programme (J.P.P.S.) “Conference Interpreting and Translation” was introduced in 2003 through a Presidential Decree (Government Gazette 272 vol. B’ 10-2-2004) and is run by the Schools of Philology, English Language and Literature, French Language and Literature, German Language and Literature and Italian Language and Literature of the Faculty of Philosophy of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. The organisation and the structure of the programme are regulated by the Postgraduate Studies’ Law (Government Gazette 148/16-7-2008), and the Aristotle University Regulation (Government Gazette 1099/5-9-2000, vol.1, 1562/13-12-2002, vol. 2 and 1517/11-10-2004 vol.2). The aim of the programme is to train interpreters and translators of modern languages to a fully professional standard and to develop knowledge and research in the field of Translation Studies.
In 2014, the translation course was awarded the “European Master’s in Translation” (EMT) quality label.
The J.P.P.S. is run by the Special Interdepartmental Committee (S.I.C), which consists of representatives of the five Schools. The Committee is responsible for all subjects, both administrative and academic.
Professor Simos P. Grammenidis of the School of French Language and Literature is the Director of the Programme ([email protected]).
Assistant Professor Anthi Wiedenmayer of the School of German Language and Literature is the Coordinator of the Conference Interpreting Course ([email protected]).
Two courses are offered: a. Conference Interpreting or Liaison Interpreting, and b. Translation –Translation Studies. The programme is funded by the Greek state; the course in interpreting is partly financed by the Directorate General for Interpretation of the European Commission (SCIC). The programme offers the following degrees: a. Interpreting and b. Translation – Translation Studies.
The programme of the courses, as well as the internal regulation of the programme have been approved by the Special Interdepartmental Committee during the assembly no. 30 of 3/4/2013 and by the University Council during the assembly no. 2864 of 23/7/2013. All classes are obligatory. The number of classes for the translation course per semester is currently as follows: 1st semester: 6 classes, 2nd semester: 7 classes, 3rd semester: 6 classes, 4th semester: professional orientation seminar, internship and preparation of an annotated translation or of a research paper (Government Gazette 3774-3-9-2018).
