[GALA Valencia 2024] A Language Quality Manager’s journey with AI - Practical use cases and limitations
This presentation aims to showcase how the role of AI has evolved in our localization practice and its direct impact on quality management. This journey goes from “Don’t know how if it would help at all” a few months back to “Actual use cases and company-wide impact” as AI is applied in a variety of projects and scenarios, all the way to “Not-so-long-term vision of an AI-centric ecosystem. We will cover practical examples of AI being applied in Coupa’s localization projects to create computer-generated voice-overs and subtitles and generate native content, accompanied by an evaluation of the actual benefits, together with the shortcomings/downsides that we have encountered. All from the perspective of a Language Quality Manager who still cares about quality.
Next, we will do a deeper dive into how to use AI for Quality Management, now and in the near future. We will look into the implications for terminology management, for tracking and reading quality KPIs, and for determining what to QA and what not using automated methods. We will have a look at various AI-powered tools and how to integrate them with existing workflows, and we will discuss how to quantify speed gains and cost savings to build an internal business case for investing in such new technology. At the same time, the benefits need to be weighed against the costs and the effort involved in this investment - it may not add business value to everyone.
The presentation will end with conclusive remarks that evaluate the current state of how AI and automation can be used in quality management and an outlook of the opportunities that lie ahead.

Languages have always played a big role in my life since I come from a mixed family in which up to 8 languages are spoken (this does not even include the different Chinese dialects spoken in my family). I embraced the opportunity to become a language quality manager in Coupa's Localization team in 2021, which is a highly dynamic and often challenging role - it certainly never gets dull. I live in Cologne (Germany) with my husband and daughter, and am still waiting for an offer to oversee the quality management of our city's beautiful Cathedral's maintenance - which I might even decline ;-)
