This presentation will examine memoQ's accessibility journey from realization to redemption-in-progress. Our erroneous assumption that translation tools were only used by sighted users was revealed and we were dismayed to hear JAWS (screen reading software) read our documentation and some of our UI. Furthermore, our interviews with visually impaired translators showed us how memoQ speaks to them or ruins their experience. Since then, we have redoubled efforts to make the product more accessible and inclusive. We'll talk about how we approach development on a daily basis and how discovering and working on accessibility has changed us individually and collectively.

Occasional poor hiring decisions are unavoidable, but LSPs often underestimate the losses caused by them. What if you could consistently make smart hires? This session will present a tried-and-true approach to internships and training that has been honed over 20 years and has long-term benefits for LSPs, students, and universities. Training interns well means strengthening your current team, your partners’ networks, and developing the buyers of the future. Newbies can significantly impact an organization's ability to develop. Enterprises want providers that can scale up fast, but have an issue committing to volumes. Language service providers (LSPs) try to deliver 100% on-time and become bottlenecks. This presentation will explore different strategies that LSPs apply to connect linguists to tasks and examine how making these strategies explicit, and reviews recurring, can positively impact scalability, client satisfaction, profitability, and stress levels. While vendor managers can drive the assignment strategy, project managers need to buy into it, and account managers need to expand their agreement terms with information that supports efficient assignment.

As the scope of translation expands in the modern global enterprise, the LSP also needs to adjust and adapt to the evolving needs. The session will cover changing automation needs, the greater use of AI, and changing linguistic data management requirements as translation is integrated into a wider range of enterprise software infrastructure. The path to being a valued partner (rather than just a vendor) in providing a pervasive language platform that enables and drives globalization success will require new skills, tools, and processes that will be covered in overview and with specific case study examples in this session.

Event globalization requires the interpretation of sessions and the localization of multiple content types to ensure a consistent, culturally relevant, and accessible experience for all audiences, in-person or virtual. In this session, Dell will present the client perspective: what an ideal end-to-end global customer experience looks like. They will share how they are transforming the language support at events from interpretation to total event globalization. As an LSP, Welocalize will show how they support the Dell team and position the interpreting team within the overall localization portfolio to meet the client’s hybrid event needs, today and in the future.

We are all very much aware of how important timely, clear and accurate communication is in a crisis setting. But, imagine not having timely, clear and accurate content in a language you can understand or a format you can access during a crisis or disaster. Translation clearly plays a really important role in crisis response. What about the other stages of crises and disasters? This talk will throw light on the potential of inter-, intra- and multimodal translation as a resilience-building tool.

Recent advances in NMT have improved the fluency of the output in certain language pairs and domains to such an extent that translators may be lured into a "fluency trap" during machine translation post-editing (MTPE). This can cause post-editors to miss significant errors. This session will describe research into the use of speech-enabled post-editing modalities, specifically text-to-speech technology during MTPE. We will summarize the foundational research and look at the impacts on post-editors' performance. Additionally, we will discuss preliminary results of an industry-funded research project that uses eye-tracking, alongside other methods, to measure the practicality and cognitive impact of this type of MTPE approach.

In software localization, many translation errors are linked to a lack of context. However, developers are often at a loss when asked to provide context. What type of context is useful to translators? What is not useful at all? When is context needed? Is there differences between languages? This session will present the learnings from a survey of over 300 translators engaged in software localization of Microsoft products and highlight a potential path to bridge the gap between software developers and translators.

International UX, content design, and localization are logical companions and it should be common practice for global SaaS companies to foster healthy relationships between those teams. Yet, as many of us know, that isn't always true. This session will use a case study from GoTo, a leader in remote work tools for collaboration and IT, that demonstrates the magic that can happen when UX, content, and localization teams work together. Delegates will hear about tools and processes, branding and style, QA and review, and more.

January 1 2022 saw the end of the “derogation” of Irish as an official language in the European Union. The derogation was a temporary exemption from the obligation to publish every piece of EU legislation in all the official languages. As a result, after enjoying a somewhat peculiar status for many years, Irish is now on a par with the other 23 official languages of the Union. This session will explore the beauty of the Irish language and examine it as a case study in linguistic preservation. Take note, fans of languages of limited diffusion - there is hope!

Once responsible for simple selection and onboarding, Vendor Managers today are responsible for a multitude of tasks and activities within an LSP. VMs are "centrally located" in the supply chain. They must be adept at cost-, capacity-, and quality-analysis; have knowledge of different cultures; possess excellent relationship management and networking skills; be adept at conflict management, and be experts at cross-team communication and collaboration. To work reliably, modern translation platforms allow us to process vast volumes of data and gain critical business insights. For example, we can take enormous volumes of files that have been post-edited, coupled with source content profiling and anonymized locale-specific productivity metadata, and run automatic scoring algorithms to capture the expected historical range of edits and words per hour for a specific locale pair and for individual strings. The latest state-of-the-art advances in AI give us the ability to capture full semantic, contextual and grammatical similarity, and perform machine translation quality estimation (MTQE) between source and machine-translated target, or benchmark several engines’ performance against each other. This multi-tiered approach results in “managing-by-exception” where human assessment is only necessary only for anomalies or escalations.

Data visualization helps identify and track patterns and trends, make predictions about future events, and track performance. In this session, we will look at how data-driven processes are key in building business maturity.

The gig economy and rise of crowd-based translation platforms brought the need for a new type of localization processes where one size does not easily fit all. In a crowd containing thousands of translators with diverse skills, backgrounds, productivity and availability, the management workflows must often respond to conflicting requirements, stemming from the different types of translators in the pool. This talk offers a comprehensive typology of crowd translators and the associated behavior patterns. It's not all doom and gloom, however, since what clients and customers want is convincing, compelling content. Typically the domain of copywriters and editors, multilingual copywriting is fast becoming an opportunity for skilled translators who develop and hone their writing skills. When we implement translation solutions to simplify multilingual communication for co-workers in IKEA, we provide the Allen key and the assembly instruction, and require the requester to assemble their project and what is needed, so they can make it by themselves. The PM-less approach is central in all parts of our implementation, but it also challenges the implementation, which sometimes stops certain translation requests, requires rethinking and a lot of fun.

If you are not certified to ISO 27001 you are a threat to cyber security. And if you are certified you are also a threat, but a smaller one. At the GALA Conference in Munich 2019 we described our journey towards ISO 9001:2015. Two years later we decided to go after the Information Security standard ISO 27001. In our session you will learn about how we got there, our mistakes along the way, what was the best and the worst of it and what would we do different if we would start the process today.

NMT requires a large amount of data to deliver the best results. This presents a problem for low-resource languages because of the lack of publicly available corpora. The MT community has developed many creative approaches to solve this problem including massive crawling, alignment, back-translation, monolingual trainings, and more. This short talk will present a process of using Python libraries to extract text from institutional Twitter accounts to create a monolingual corpora for Galician that can be used to train an NLP engine. Results evaluated by native speakers prove this approach has promise.

In this talk we will discover different strategies that you can use to automate your workflows and connect with your clients. We will dive deep into which approach to take in which scenario, the biggest problems you will likely face, and how to swiftly deal with them.

We often hear about pricing as a strategy to succeed in the market economy, but what if we flip the question and think about fairness, instead? The digital workspace should aspire to the same standards of fairness and equity applied elsewhere when considering rates, work/life balance, and safety in the workplace. Companies have a responsibility to create and maintain digital workspaces that are healthy and safe for freelancers to work with. This panel will include the voices of different localization experts (freelancers, academics, buyers, and LSPs) to discuss the present and future of equity in the localization industry.

The content enablement landscape differs massively from what existed just a few years ago. This panel will investigate how good-old linguistic quality focus on perfection has shifted towards a user-centric and use-case driven fit-for-purpose quality concept. Panelists will explore the key criteria for content categorization and how such content types should be linked to user-centric and user-inclusive quality requirements. The concept of service (quality) levels will be introduced to inspire the audience on how to design an efficient end-to-end service delivery framework with quality requirements that vary depending on content's use case, its business importance, and its user-centricity.

This talk will address the question of what to do when out-of-the box solutions to automation and integration tasks are unavailable or uneconomical. To illustrate this problem, Marton will present case studies from projects where unorthodox engineering solutions were used. These include the creative use of browser macros, web-scraping, URL-generation, low-code tools and/or a combination of these. This presentation is for anyone who is interested in new ways to solve old problems, or who is ever stuck trying to figure out how to automate tasks or make two systems talk to each other.

The GALA Common MTPE Training Handbook is a product of the collective expertise, know-how, experience, knowledge, ideas, insight, inspiration, and intelligence of all the members of the MTPE Training SIG. Rather than creating a training course syllabus, this handbook is intended to provide a current snapshot of MTPE skills, competencies, and training needs, establish a MTPE common code of ethics, and set guidelines for bridging the training gap between Academia, Client, LSPs and Post-Editors. This session will present and review the handbook with members and non-members of this SIG to celebrate this collective work.

We will look into how the latest state-of-the-art remote interpreting solutions, that embrace AI and human teams, support today’s public sector processes in the Netherlands.

NMT is here to stay and is already used widely in large and medium-sized companies. With several years of experience, now is a good time to take stock of requirements, opportunities, and obstacles when introducing NMT. Christian Eisold, a computational linguist working as a language process consultant at berns language consulting, Düsseldorf, will address several essential steps in the NMT implementation process: data acquisition, data preparation, and evaluation before and after system selection. He will also examine the skills required of data managers, computational linguists, and evaluators. Taken together, these insights will help participants understand their organizational set-up needs for running a successful NMT process.

Translation of large volumes of content into a new language is always challenging and it becomes more complex if the content is regularly updated. This session will discuss technological strategies to organize a cost-effective, selective approach to post-editing of machine translation on large volumes of content like knowledge bases, community forums, product descriptions in large online retailers, and more. Attendees will learn how to leverage marketing tools, experience management software, and machine translation statistics to help turn these giant projects into something more manageable.

The COVID-19 pandemic was a super-accelerator for over the phone (OPI), remote video interpreting (VRI) and remote simultaneous interpreting (RSI) and multilingual remote communication is here to stay. Remote interpreting poses unique challenges for LSPs, interpreters, end users, and clients. Clients are global, and interpreters increasingly work across international borders. LSPs struggle to provide professionally trained interpreters for a highly-segmented market with country-specific language access requirements. This panel session is here to help! CSA estimates there are 27,000 Language Service Providers – a crowded market. How do you position your business to compete and grow in such a crowded space? Paraic will share elements of growth strategy, from identity and branding, to market segmentation and positioning, and strategic tools for differentiation and growth. He will illustrate using specific examples from the experience of growing Iconic Translation Machines, from its founding in 2013 to its sale in 2020, in a crowded market of MT providers and open-source toolkits. While Iconic was a technology company, these growth strategies are equally relevant across the language services industry.

Localization in Africa presents tremendous opportunities and numerous challenges for those wishing to succeed in that market. With continued predicted growth and high demand countered by social, political, and economic obstacles outside of our control, it becomes imperative to optimize the processes we do control. This presentation will focus on the immediate and very solvable performance issues resulting from project handoffs and instructions from international MLVs that are often ineffective when dealing with vendors or freelancers in emerging markets. We'll use case studies to demonstrate the main problems and provide examples of simple solutions that, if implemented, will improve vendor performance immediately.

The localization world is full of managers: from project managers, vendor managers, and quality managers, to program managers, general managers, and many more. While they all seem different, they all rely on their traits and skills to lead successful teams and help others grow personally and professionally. In this presentation, we will discuss the change of mindset required to become a successful people manager in the world of localization, how to handle the ups and downs of leading a team, and how to effectively deal with growing challenges like remote work, diversity, and team distribution across multiple time zones.

For the past five years, our company has been on a transformation journey. By developing clear core values, adhering to strict business ethics, and committing to the process, we reduced employee turnover from 50% to 15%, had our best sales year yet, and have a 3-year employee retention rate of more than 60%. There is no secret formula and there are no shortcuts. Using our journey as a model, we'll explore core values, unavoidable obstacles, and common challenges, and demonstrate why doing the right thing may be hard, but is always worth it.

The time of instability, lay-offs, and rethinking of our place in the corporate environment is a time of new trials but also big opportunities. To stay on top of the evolving industry demands, to be successful and to secure a position in the localization job market, the localization (program) managers working on the buyers' side have to develop additional skills that sometimes are not obviously necessary. The key success factor is understanding what the companies require, mastering new competencies, and their successful implementation in day-to-day work.

With the increased use of MT reducing the cost of some translations, buyers have more budget to spend on value-added language tasks, like SEO localization. Since this service requires much more than simply translating keywords, there needs to be a paradigm shift. Four key stakeholders are involved in this change: translators, buyers, LSPs, and language technology providers. This industry trend poses new challenges for each of them, and it also offers them the chance to seize new opportunities.

Recent advances in technology have so far done little to remove the main obstacle to effective multilingual terminology work in translation/localization projects, namely insufficient time and resources. Consequently, terminology work is still often neglected in favour of more immediate needs. However, AI and NLP technologies can help us make the most out of these limited resources. In this presentation, we showcase how state-of-the-art AI and NLP technologies can be combined with traditional approaches to make terminology work smarter. Included will be case studies showing how these results can be put into practice to streamline the terminology lifecycle.

On the border of ethics and business, the decision of how to much to charge for translation services and how much to pay linguists is a difficult one. It is one of the most challenging decisions that an LSP can make. This session aims to create an open forum for discussion. How do linguists get paid? By the word, by the hour, as employees, as contractors? What are the variables to consider? How little can LSP’s pay linguists without forcing them to leave the industry? How can a fair-wage-paying LSP compete with lower-priced competitors? How can a customer justify paying more? How do we break the cycle? Many say it's just how business works, but is that how we want our businesses to work? Let's discuss.

When thinking about the most important business deal of your life, the "match," the timing, and the market are all critical things to consider. (And what about that emotional attachment?) The market has been buoyant these past few years but change is on the horizon. How can we prepare for this? What are the benefits of joining a business acceleration or seller incubation program? It is no longer debatable that technology has an impact on the environment and on our societies. The questions around how we can use it responsibly are increasingly becoming part of our professional discourse. This panel, comprised of "mindful technophiles," will address the following questions: 1. Where do our devices come from and what is the impact of designing and manufacturing them? 2. Where do the data come from in our systems? 3. Who are the real beneficiaries of certain pieces of technology? 4. What is the environmental impact of running a certain piece of technology? In 2020 and 2021, an already growing awareness of interpreting-related businesses and services was galvanized by the rise in demand related to the global pandemic. We begin with lunch at a local restaurant and then continue on with a visit to St. Patrick’s Cathedral, an Anglican cathedral built in 1213 in honor of Ireland’s patron saint, St. Patrick. St. Patrick’s is the largest cathedral in Ireland and has an interesting connection with Jonathan Swift (author of Gulliver's Travels), who was Dean there from 1713 to 1745. 

St. Patrick himself is said to have used a well on this site to baptize converts to the Christian faith and due to its sacred association with St. Patrick, a church has stood here since the 5th century. 

We then continue to Jameson Distillery on Bow Street, a Museum/Heritage Centre devoted to the history and tradition of Irish Whiskey. It is located just north of the River Liffey. It lies on the site of the original Jameson Distillery, with its origins dating back to 1780. Here, guests will have the opportunity to learn about the distillation of whiskey in Ireland, followed by an exclusive Distillery Edition tasting in John Jameson’s office.
